- Two meetings were held in conjunction with the CAM Committee. Tracy Murray's
- small meeting to cover OS/2 OSD concepts wound up attracting 23 attendees on
- the previous afternoon. At this session, the considerations of booting under
- OS/2 occupied much time, in addition to how SIM (SCSI Interface Modules) would
- be supported in ROM, RAM or in an ABIOS. A representative of Microsoft
- attended and provided recommendations.
-
- The most active debate of the day took place over the meeting schedule. By
- tying the CAM Committee to the SCSI activities, we are on a 2/6 split every
- two months. The new schedule calls for tying the CAM Committee to the SCSI
- Working Group and scheduling the other meeting two weeks before the plenary. A
- chorus of non-West Coast attendees called for the next meeting to be held at a
- hub, and Denver was the preferred site.
-
- Next on the most active list was the discussion over how the layers of the CAM
- should be portrayed. Clint Ballard and Mike Jerbic both offered their versions
- before Tracy Murray and Rick Tewell took the floor to explain the events of
- the OS/2 pre-meeting, where the Thing was introduced. The Thing is an entity
- which contains the OSD, Boot and Transport functions.
-
- Clint Ballard Diagram of CAM Functions
- Mike Jerbic Block Diagram of Model
- Tracy Murray Summary of OS/2 Pre-Meeting and the "Thing"
- Rick Tewell Explanation behind choice of the "Thing"
- Rich Moren Unix Security
- Jerry Armstrong CHS Algorithm
- Jerry Katzung Description of current Mac-SCSI Implementation
-
- Rich Moren presented his views on Unix security, a factor that will need to be
- considered in the OSD for Unix.
-
- Jerry Armstrong proposed two best-fit algorithms for CHS to relative address
- translation. The one adopted was not the most efficient but it did allow disks
- of up to 460 MB capacity to be supported with only 15 head addresses.
-
- Jerry Katzung described how Apple's present implementation of device drivers
- and the SCSI Manager work. It was not presented as a model to emulate (as it
- requires the device drivers to manage SCSI phases), but because there was
- interest the Apple implementation. After all, the largest installed base of
- SCSI products is on Apple systems.
-
- A post-meeting on extensions to the de facto interface for AT-bus disk
- controllers was held the following day at Quantum's facility. A full set of
- minutes prepared by Jim McGrath are attached.
-
- The next meeting is scheduled for April 13 in Denver, and provision has been
- made for a post-meeting on the 14th (nothing yet scheduled for it). The pre-
- meetings are difficult for some to attend. It has been suggested that we hold
- post-meetings.
-
- NOTE: The SCSI BBS (316-636-8700), Area 13 is the clearing house between
- members working on proposals. Proposals etc will be in the Files section and
- short exchanges are in the Message section.
